Why Choose an Alaska Cruise?
If you've never been to Alaska, stop judging it by Instagram photos. They don't come close.
The glaciers are bigger. The mountains are taller. The whales are closer. And somehow every turn makes you reach for your camera even though you know the picture won't capture it.
Whether you want to watch whales in Juneau, stand in front of a glacier in Glacier Bay, or just sit on your balcony with a Diet Coke and stare at the scenery for a week, Alaska delivers.
(And yes, I'm still going to tell you to get the balcony.) 😏
My Alaska Cruise Dealbreaker: Glacier Bay
Here's my Alaska cruise hot take: if an itinerary doesn't include Glacier Bay, I'm already asking questions.
Glacier Bay National Park is one of the biggest reasons people dream about Alaska in the first place. Massive glaciers. Wildlife everywhere. Scenery that makes your camera roll look fake.
The catch? Not every cruise line has access.
The National Park Service limits the number of ships allowed into Glacier Bay each day, which means some itineraries skip it entirely. That's why two Alaska cruises that look similar on paper can deliver very different experiences.
Before you book, look beyond the cruise line name and check the actual itinerary. Glacier Bay access can make the difference between a good Alaska cruise and the Alaska cruise you'll still be talking about years later.
If Glacier Bay is on your must-see list, make sure it's actually included before you hit that final payment button.
Which Alaska Cruise Line is Right For You?
Which Alaska Cruise Line Do I Recommend Most Often?
If you've talked to me for more than five minutes about Alaska, you've probably already guessed my answer:
Princess.
I'm a Certified Princess Cruises expert, and Alaska is one of the destinations where I think they really shine.
Princess has been sailing Alaska for decades and offers a wide variety of itineraries, including many that visit Glacier Bay. They also have strong partnerships on land, making them a great option for travelers who want to combine a cruise with a land tour.
That doesn't mean Princess is right for everyone.
Holland America is another excellent Alaska choice, especially for travelers who want a more destination-focused experience. Celebrity offers a more modern and upscale feel. Royal Caribbean can be a good fit for families who want lots of onboard activities.
But here's my advice:
Don't choose a cruise line because of a commercial, a Facebook group recommendation, or because your neighbor sailed with them once.
Choose the itinerary first.
Then choose the cruise line that delivers the Alaska experience you're looking for.
